Comporta
2025
A 420 m² dune-side residence in Comporta, conceived around light, cork, and the particular silence of the Alentejo coast.
(01) — Scope
Interior architecture, FF&E, bespoke furniture
The site came first: a flat stretch of maritime pine, a dune line, and a quality of afternoon light that turns everything amber. The brief was deceptively simple — a house that holds eight in summer and two in winter, without feeling like either. We built with cork board, local limestone, and whitewashed concrete, keeping the palette close to the landscape so the building neither announces itself nor hides.

(02) — The house
The Living Room
The main living space opens onto the dune garden through a set of full-height pivot doors in oiled iroko wood. When they are open, the boundary between inside and outside becomes a question of temperature rather than architecture. The Pleat Sofa sits low against the south wall, its washed linen the colour of dried grass. A pair of Tuff Side Tables in honed travertine anchor the seating area without interrupting the sightline to the pines. Walls are finished in a limewash mixed with local sand, giving the surface a warmth that changes from morning to evening.
The Kitchen and Dining
The kitchen is built in cork-faced cabinetry that runs the full length of the north wall, with a long island in honed Moleanos limestone at its centre. We avoided upper units so the room reads as a single plane of warm material rather than a series of boxes. The dining table is custom, cast concrete on a powder-coated steel frame, surrounded by chairs in saddle leather. A skylight above the island draws a column of white light through the space at noon.
The Bedrooms
Each of the five bedrooms faces a different part of the landscape. The main suite looks directly over the dune to the Atlantic. Its walls are entirely plain, the only objects a bed in solid walnut, a single Halo Floor Lamp that throws a warm ring of light upward, and a Vessel No.3 on the windowsill. Linen curtains run floor to ceiling, their weight slowing the way the light enters in the morning. The guest rooms are simpler still, each one white and quiet, with cork floors and nothing on the walls.

Living Room
Afternoon light fills the living room from the west, reaching the linen sofa just before it leaves.

In their words
We asked for a house that felt like it had grown there. That is exactly what we got.
